The XVIII Commonwealth Games were held in Melbourne, Australia from 15 – 26 March 2006.
The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games was the largest sporting and community event ever staged in Melbourne, even larger than the 1956 Olympics.
Team England were successful in achieving a total of 110 medals – 36 gold; 40 silver; and 34 bronze, with over 50% of athletes returning home with a medal. Fifteen out of the 16 competing sports – aquatics, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, rugby 7s, shooting, squash, table tennis, triathlon and weightlifting – medalled at the 2006 Games. Team England were the only country to medal in all team sports.
A total of 521 members, made up the 2006 team, there being 348 athletes and 173 officials.
Seventy one nations competed in the 16 sports and as with the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, elite athletes with a disability competed in 4 of the sports – aquatics, athletics, table tennis and weightlifting.
